Although the most effective way to improve overall home security is through the installation of an integrated security system, this can sometimes fall outside the immediate budget of an average homeowner. However, by following some simple tips for improving your overall home security, severely reducing the chances and impact of a potential burglary is achievable.
Most burglars will target the house on the block which appears to be the easiest target. Uncut lawns, overgrown shrubbery and a lack of any warning to a potential intruder are all invitations. Make it appear as if someone is always in the residence by having a car parked in the driveway at all times and ask a neighbor to collect newspapers or mail if you are taking a vacation. One common clue that assists criminals is not putting out the garbage on a weekly collection day. Other actions such as keeping interior lighting on a timer can thwart the observations of a potential criminal.
Creating the illusion of a secure property is often just as effective as having an actual security system. From wiring an alarm to go off if someone enters the household to installing fake security cameras, there are a multitude of ways to scare off the typical amateur. According to Lifehacker, “Homes without security systems are about 3 times more likely to be broken into. In lieu of actually signing up for a home security system, you could also just buy the decals and signs off of eBay or elsewhere.”
